ERRANTES follows a chorus of six figures as they cross the city in search of the traces left by monuments and symbols associated with authoritarian narratives in Brazilian history. Starting from these presences inscribed in public space, the production interrogates what a city chooses to celebrate, preserve and pass on as memory.
Structured in eight movements, the work is born from the project cartas a ele., staged by Núcleo Barro 3 in the streets of São Paulo. Walks, drifts and performative actions carried out at the city's monuments became material for the dramaturgy and for the construction of the staging, bringing together memory, labour, the occupation of urban space and the possibility of collective transformation.
ON THE STAGING
The staging of ERRANTES starts from an observation of the city and the transformation of that gaze into stage composition. The bodies of the cast are organised into precise, linear and repetitive formations, bringing movement, image and displacement close together. The physical construction works with the idea of a chorus traversed by individualities, bodies that move through, occupy and place tension on a space marked by memories and symbols of power.
The set and costumes draw on materials and forms observed in public space, while the lighting engages with modes of display found in museums and monuments. The sound design incorporates urban sonorities and helps bring the staging closer to the concrete experience of the city.
Across the eight movements, these languages are reorganised into different compositions. The production alternates between containment, displacement and moments of greater collective expansion, until the chorus becomes a kind of protest party, in which the occupation of the stage also comes to imagine the symbolic fall of the authoritarian figures that run through the research.
